Making Design an accessible career choice for Columbia Students
Design at Columbia is an inclusive community of Columbia students, faculty, alumni that practice the art of making change. Design at Columbia was established in early 2020 by founders Laura Block, Perrin Anto as well as Prof. Lydia Chilton and Prof. Mark Santolucito as a response to tackle the limited visibility and accessibility in design education at Columbia. Since May 2020, the initiative has gained 1000+ community members interested in different design subfields. Over the past semesters, Design at Columbia has increased its presence on campus through various hands-on workshops and sprints (e.g. Summer Design Sprints, Figma Fridays Workshops), career keynotes (e.g. Breaking into UX/UI with Michael Ruocco, Breaking into Design Panel with Students) and industry events (e.g. Cross Cultural Design with IDEO Japan, Guest lectures by practicing professors).
Design at Columbia’s prides itself in providing students with skill-building opportunities and design career discovery through building a supportive community. Therefore, we are launching a funded initiative for collaboration between students and faculty through product sprints, panels with designers at companies such as Google, sending a student team to Philips service design days, building a mentorship program and sharing student voices of their individual paths into design. Moving forward, Design at Columbia is excited to further build our partnerships with industry and build a pipeline for Columbia students aiming to pursue a design related career and expand our community efforts through collaborations with other initiatives.
As current president of this organization, I oversee the board of 25 students and lead the organization of design-centered events for the Columbia community.
